The S&P/ASX 200 finished down 16 points, closing to 4,505.10. At 11.30am today, the Australian Bureau of Statistics releases housing finance data for December.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average had its largest gain overnight in 3 months. The Dow closed up 150 points (1.52%) to end the day at 10,058.64.
The rally was fueled by news that Germany could be a white night for Greece, as both countries are currently in talks to see what can be done to solve the debt problem. However, German Finance Ministry spokesman Michael Offer has said that “No decisions concerning aid have been made.”
Overnight in the UK, the FTSE was up by 19 points, ending at 5,111.84.
The Nikkei was down overnight, closing to 9,932.90, lower by 18 points.
The price of spot gold in Australian dollars is trading at $1,227.25 while in US Dollars it is trading at $1,078.67. The price of silver in Aussie dollars is $17.59 and in US Dollars it is $15.46.
Gold has had a short rally overnight, but Mihir Dange, a COMEX gold floor trader said “that until gold gets back above the USD$1,100, we can’t say for sure that we are back in a bull market”.
The Aussie dollar versus the US dollar is trading at USD$0.8788, and against the Japanese Yen JPY78.85
Crude Oil rose overnight, closing at USD$73.87, higher by 2.75%.
